Sizing Recommendations
StratoLens analyzes performance metrics for your Azure virtual machines, VM scale sets, managed disks and App Service plans, and recommends a cheaper configuration that still fits the observed workload.
What You'll Learn
- Find downsizing opportunities across VMs, scale sets, managed disks and App Service plans in one ranked view, with monthly and annual savings
- Validate each recommendation against its evidence: utilization statistics, rationale, confidence factors and warnings
- Track realized savings after a change, including cumulative savings across multi-step downsizes
Key Capabilities
Three Resource Types, One View
Virtual machines and scale sets, managed disks and App Service plans appear in one hierarchy, filterable by resource type.
Metrics-Driven Sizing
Recommendations size against P95 statistics of observed CPU, memory and disk I/O, not averages.
Instant Alternatives
Toggles switch between pre-computed alternatives (cross-family SKUs, cheaper tiers, scale-in, disk SKU conversions) without re-running a scan.
Safety Checks Built In
Targets are rejected when they can't keep a feature the resource uses (Premium storage, accelerated networking, deployment slots, zone redundancy) or would need a disk to shrink.
Confidence Scoring
Every recommendation carries a Very High, High, Medium or Low confidence level with the factors behind it.
Realized Savings Tracking
When you act on a recommendation, StratoLens records the savings, including multi-step downsizes.
Per-Type Tuning
Aggressiveness and the minimum data window are set separately for each resource type.

Feature Integration
- Orphaned Resources: sizing never recommends deletion. Unattached disks and App Service plans with no apps are covered there.
- Dashboard: the Sizing widget shows the top 20 savings opportunities across all resource types.
- Email Notifications: the Sizing alert type covers all resource types, and a Resource Types selection limits it. Hidden recommendations are excluded.
- Scheduled Reports: VM sizing reports link to the Sizing page filtered to Virtual Machines. Disks and App Service plans have no sizing report.
- Performance Metrics: View Performance opens the metric charts behind a VM or App Service plan recommendation.
- Resource Explorer: View in Explorer opens any recommended resource with its full configuration and history.
- Automated Scanning: recommendations are produced during scans, and settings apply on the next scan.
