Recommendations Page

Browse, filter and act on sizing recommendations for every resource type, hide noise and review realized savings. Open Recommendations > Sizing from the left sidebar, or follow a link from the Sizing dashboard widget, a Sizing email notification or a VM sizing report.

Prerequisites

Viewing the page, hiding and unhiding require read access to the data domain. Without it, the Sizing item is hidden from the sidebar. Recommendations appear after at least one completed scan with performance metrics collected for the resources.

VMs, disks and App Service plans share one hierarchy. Savings badges roll up across every visible resource type.

Filters

The page loads every resource type at once. Filters only narrow what's shown; they never reload data. On narrow screens the filters collapse into a Filters popover.

Resource type
Virtual Machines, Managed Disks and App Service Plans, each with its recommendation count. No selection shows all types. Changing it clears the selected resource and drops Type selections that no longer apply; Severity and Confidence selections are kept.
Type
The kind of change, grouped by resource type (labeled Recommendation Type in the Filters popover). Options are listed below.
Severity
High, Medium, Low. See Severity.
Confidence
Very High, High, Medium, Low. See Confidence.
Show hidden (N)
Includes hidden recommendations, shown muted. Appears only when at least one recommendation is hidden.
Show resolved
Switches to the realized savings view.

Recommendation types

Virtual Machines
VM SKU Downsize, VMSS SKU Downsize
Managed Disks
Tier Downgrade, SKU Conversion, Premium SSD v2 Migration, Stopped VM
App Service Plans
Size down, Scale in, Resize and scale in, Cheaper tier, Newer generation
Type options are grouped under each visible resource type.

Toggles

Each scan stores several pre-computed alternatives per resource. Click Toggles to open Toggle Options and choose which alternatives are eligible. The page then shows the cheapest eligible one, instantly, without re-running analysis.

The popover starts with Minimum Savings, which applies to every resource type, followed by one section per visible resource type. The per-type toggles are described on Virtual Machines, Managed Disks and App Service Plans. Each section header shows how many of its toggles differ from the default, and the Toggles button shows the total. With one or two resource types visible, sections open automatically; with all three, only sections with non-default settings start open.

Defaults

Minimum Savings
$10/month. Options from $0 to $500.
Virtual Machines
All toggles off
Managed Disks
Allow Changes Requiring VM Stop on, the other two off
App Service Plans
Allow scale-in (fewer instances) on, the other two off

Minimum Savings hides small recommendations

With the $10/month default, smaller savings are hidden. Set it to $0 to see every recommendation. The threshold is applied after the cheapest eligible alternative is chosen, so it hides a recommendation rather than making the page pick a different alternative.

Toggles vs. aggressiveness

Toggles pick from alternatives stored at the last scan, so they're instant. Aggressiveness is a Scanner Setting and applies on the next scan.

Toggle Options with one non-default VM toggle, so the Virtual Machines section shows a badge of 1. Minimum Savings is lowered to $0 here.

Browsing Recommendations

Drill down Subscriptions, then Resource Groups, then Resources. Each row shows the monthly savings rolled up to that level, summed across all visible resource types. Select a resource to open the Sizing Recommendations detail panel with its recommendation card. Each card's layout is described on its resource type page.

The panel header has View in Explorer for every resource type, and View Performance for virtual machines and App Service plans, which opens the metric charts in Performance Metrics.

A resource can show more than one card when two resources in the same resource group share a name, for example a VM and a disk. Cards are grouped by resource type.

Hiding Recommendations

Click Hide on a card to remove it from the default view, optionally with a reason. Turn on Show hidden to see hidden items again, and click Unhide to restore one. The hidden count covers all resource types, whatever the Resource type filter shows. Hidden recommendations are also excluded from Sizing email notifications.

Hiding affects only the view

A hidden recommendation is still recalculated each scan. Hide and Unhide are recorded in the audit log as "VM Sizing Preferences Updated", "Disk Sizing Preferences Updated" or "App Service Sizing Preferences Updated", with the reason if you gave one.

Hiding a disk recommendation. The optional reason is kept in the audit log.

Realized Savings View

Turn on Show resolved to see one card per realized saving. Only the Resource type filter applies in this view; the other filters and toggles don't, and the selected resource is cleared. For what counts as a change and how savings accumulate, see Realized Savings.

Realized Savings

A resolved VM downsize. Realized savings are measured against the original monthly cost.

Sharing and Default Views

Filters and toggles are kept in the page URL, so the browser's back and forward buttons step through filter changes.

To make the current filters and toggles your default for this page, click the Save view as default icon next to the filters. Your default applies when you open the page without parameters. A link that already carries filters, for example from a report, opens as linked and doesn't apply your default.

Share a filtered view

Copy the page link to share exactly what you're looking at, or bookmark it.

Troubleshooting

A resource I expected isn't listed

Answer

Check the Minimum Savings threshold, the Resource type and Type filters, and whether the recommendation is hidden (turn on Show hidden). Then check the resource type's page for what that type covers: Virtual Machines, Managed Disks or App Service Plans.

I turned on a toggle but nothing changed

Answer

The current pick may already be the cheapest option. The card's slot badge shows which alternative is active; with no badge, the default alternative is still the cheapest.

The dashboard widget shows a resource the page doesn't

Answer

Links from the Sizing widget open the page with Minimum Savings at $0. When you open the page directly, the $10/month default may be hiding the resource.

Some resource types didn't load

Answer

The banner "Some resource types could not be loaded." means one resource type's data failed to load; the others are still shown. Reload the page. If it persists, contact support with the message text.

Show resolved is empty

Answer

Realized savings appear only after a scan detects that a recommended resource changed to a cheaper configuration.
